The name Apterygota is Greek in origin, and means "without wings." This subclass contains primitive insects that do not fly, and were wingless throughout their evolutionary history.

Description:

The wingless insects of this subclass do not undergo metamorphosis. Instead, the larval forms are smaller versions of their adult parents. Apterygote insects molt throughout their lives, not just during the growth phase. Their mouthparts are retracted within the head.

Orders in the Subclass Apterygota:
  • Thysanura - Silverfish and Firebrats
  • Diplura - Diplurans
  • Protura - Proturans
  • Collembola - Springtails
