The large butterfly on the left is an owl butterfly, Caligo idomeneus. It is native to the Amazon and eastern Andes Mountains regions of South America. The smaller butterfly is a Morpho, Morpho deidamia, from Central and South America. Seen from above, this butterfly is a brilliant blue and black. It is one of many butterflies that displays completely different colors on each surface of its wings. Both of these species have "eyespots" on the underside of their wings, which are thought to deter predators.
