The tobacco hornworm, also commonly called the Carolina sphinx, nectars at dusk on honeysuckle, petunia, and moonflower, as well as other flowers. It inhabits gardens, roadsides, and fields.

Caterpillar hosts: tomato, tobacco, ground cherry, horse-nettle, nightshade, and potato.
