Banded Orange Heliconian

The monarch isn't the only orange and black butterfly in the world. The banded orange heliconian, a longwing butterfly, is another brilliantly colored beauty.

Banded orange heliconians range from central Mexico to Brazil. Occasional reports of the species occur in Texas and Kansas. Banded orange heliconians also inhabit southern Florida.

Dryadula phaetusa larvae feed on passion vine leaves. Adults nectar on various flowers, and also feed on bird droppings.
