Generally, millipedes make good pets. They are one of the easier arthropods to keep in captivity. Their care requirements are fairly simple, making a millipede a good option for a classroom pet. The larger, tropical millipedes are readily available in pet stores and science catalogs. Here are some things to consider before purchasing a pet millipede.

Pros of Keeping Pet Millipedes

  • Millipedes are a good choice if you want an arthropod you can handle. They move slowly, and are generally docile.
  • You can keep several millipedes together in the same enclosure.
  • Millipedes breed easily in captivity.
  • Since millipedes are herbivores, they're easier to feed than other arthropods that feed on crickets or other insects. All you need is a steady supply of fruits and vegetables.

Cons of Keeping Pet Millipedes

  • When feeling threatened, millipedes excrete a defensive chemical that stains your skin yellow if you happen to be handling the millipede at the time.
  • Millipedes are nocturnal creatures, so you won't observe much activity unless you spend time with your millipede at night.
  • If you don't want more millipedes than you can care for, you shouldn't mix males and females in the same terrarium. They will readily reproduce.
  • Some millipedes, especially brightly colored species, secrete hydrogen cyanide as a defensive strategy. This can cause a very unpleasant burning sensation if it comes in contact with your skin.
  • Some people may be highly sensitive to the defensive chemicals of millipedes.
