Did you know...
Now that's a cool insect name, isn't it? Unfortunately, the glassy-winged sharpshooters is anything but cool in California. This leafhopper species is native to the southeastern United States, but was introduced to California in the early 1990's. Because it is the vector for the disease-causing bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which impacts grape vines and many other plants, this insect was not a welcomed find. It's called the sharpshooter because it expels its waste (which is 99.9% water) with remarkable force.
