Wishing all my readers a happy holiday season and best wishes for the new year!
This festive beetle is known as a Christmas beetle (with or without the Santa hat). Christmas beetles belong to the genus Anoplognathus, and 34 species of Christmas beetles are found in Australia. These scarab beetles appear in abundance right around the holiday season, when they mate and lay eggs.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has a nice fact sheet about Christmas beetles, if you'd like to learn more.
