Bug of the Week - December 19, 2012

Are you ready for another challenge? See if you can identify this insect to species by next Tuesday. I'll give you one hint - this insect only measures 5-7mm long. Next Wednesday, I'll post the answer along with another challenge.

Last week's photo was of one of the metallic wood-boring beetles, also known as buprestid beetles or jewel beetles. Its blue feet were the clue that probably helped Moni and Jeff identify it correctly as the Drummond's blue-footed buprestid, or Buprestis drummondi. Spirula identified it correctly to genus - well done.

(1) Moni says:

It is Agasicles hygrophila – Alligatorweed Flea Beetle Knew it was a flea beetle, but had to look at bugguide to figure out which one as it is not common in the Midwest :)
