Bug of the Week - February 18, 2009

Here's this week's bug of the week! Once again, I've given you a few hints in the forum. Can you name this bug?

Last week's bug of the week was a tricky one, but three readers got the right answer. Mobugs41 remembered seeing a glowworm beetle once before, and Alan also knew it was a glowworm. Weirdbuglady even named the right family - Phengodidae. Nice work, everyone!

I am so NOT an entomologist. But I think damselflies are the dandiest! I’m guessing a damselfly first, maybe a dragon fly, but that abdomen looks too skinny and the 2 sets of winds look to be the same size – Isoptera…if I remember ANYTHING from my social entomology class.
Beautiful Picture!

A great way to tell the difference between dragonflies and damselflies is: Dragonflies rest with their wings outstretched (like the picture) and damselflies rest with their wings over their back. :o )

Yes, MObugs41, that’s probably one of the quickest ways to tell the difference between a dragonfly and a damselfly. This article outlines seven other differences, too.

I believe it’s some kind of Saddlebag dragonfly, although I couldn’t begin to tell you which exact type. I got a good look at one here in Houston last fall.

It’s so amazing to see him hanging on with his “hands”.
