I'm in the market for a new mattress. I can't stand rolling into the crevasse of a dent in my bed anymore. Hoping to find a good deal, I Googled around the term mattress for a bit. Now I'm scared of getting bed bugs.
An MSNBC investigation into bed bugs and refurbished mattresses uncovered some sobering details about the mattress business. Their investigative reporters took hidden cameras into a mattress factory to see how workers were ridding used mattresses of bed bugs before re-covering them. The factory workers gave the bedding, which had been collected from curbs by men with vans, a cursory spray with a pesticide. The chemical doesn't work on bed bug eggs, though, so the treatment was more for show than anything.
I wasn't planning to buy a refurbished mattress, so at this point in the story I wasn't really shuddering. Then the reporters noted that this same factory produced new mattresses, too. Those new mattresses were piled up, right along with untreated used ones waiting for refurbishing.
On second thought, the crater in my mattress is kind of nice, really. I think I'll keep it a little longer.
