New Yorker Hospitalized with Mite Infestation

Friday June 6, 2008

A bird's nest in a bathroom vent proved to be the final straw in a NY woman's fight with her landlord. Her exposure to the wild birds earned her a trip to the hospital with bird mites all over her torso.

The parasitic arachnids can quickly multiply, and while not aggressive, they do tend to bite. The disgruntled renter, Nina Bradica, described the ordeal like being pricked with tiny needles over and over. First responders who arrived at her house had Bradica don a Hazmat suit to prevent the mites from infesting them as well.

Bradica had stopped paying rent months ago, claiming problems she reported with the apartment were ignored by her landlord. She expects to be released from the hospital with 48 hours, but won't return to the apartment again.
